EqSD Legislative Day: Activities at the State Capitol

Today several members of the BHCFE board of directors are attending EqSD legislative day in Pierre. This fun and informative day is put together by Equality South Dakota and allows LGTBQ leaders and allies from around the state the opportunity to see legislative activities in action. So far today BHCFE board members and other equality leaders have had the opportunity to sit in on a House caucus meeting and sit in on a House voting session. One of the bills that discussed in the caucus meeting we sat in on and went for a House vote was HB 1112 which would “establish certain procedures regarding a transgender policy for the purposes of participation in high school activities and to declare void any present transgender policy of any association recognized under chapter 13-16.” Attendees were able to sit in the balcony while this bill was discussed and voted on. Later on, today we will be attending a legislative reception at View 34 in Pierre and have the opportunity to meet and greet with any legislators who attend. We are enjoying our day here so far in Pierre seeing the legislative processes in action.

Warm Regards,

Sarah Keppen

BCHFE Board Member
